“The world rewards you for value provided, not time spent.”

[#quotable💬] “The world rewards you for value provided, not time spent.” – James Clear

💭 #thinkwithme: I once hired a professional to do a task I needed help with - one that I had seen them do in 5 minutes (it still seems to take me 20mins and then some 😩).

I offered them an amount for remuneration a bit above the average based on my research.

Yet, they hesitated to accept it.

They almost offered to do the task for free.

They felt bad to take 'so much'.

To them, the task was easy and wouldn't take long.

Before this experience, I learned the hard way when freelancing that it's not effective to charge by the hour or per word written. It is better to charge an amount for the project or an agreed result. Some really rough professional experiences led me to this conclusion, and helped inform my thinking around 'presenteeism'.

So I explained to them: I'm not remunerating for your time spent doing this task... I know you can do it more efficiently than anyone else and this is a reasonable amount to charge for that skill. I don't mind if you do it in 5 or 20, or when you do it, I just mind that it's done, and I know I can rely on you.

…I know this quote by James Clear is not the case in all circumstances. (I always find there is a catch 22 when single sentences are extracted out of context.)

Yet, it reminds me of these experiences and I wanted to share.

What do you think? 💡
